Avoid High Tide When Finding Middle C



Finding the right middle c will allow you to play your music correctly by finding the proper starting point and avoiding going an octave too high or too low.

When guiding your piano ship to the sea of piano greatness there is one starting point that every piano sailor must be familiar with. That starting point is known as middle C. Middle C is simply the point of location on the piano keyboard that creates a center starting point for all sheet music. Below is an image of Middle C represented on an 88 key keyboard, however Middle C is the fourth C from the left end of a full piano keyboard. The reason Middle C is so important is that it allows all piano players to read music with the same keyboard orientation.



As shown below Middle C is represented on sheet music as the line below the treble staff and as the line above the bass staff. One could say that Middle C is where the treble and bass clefs intersect.



In closing, middle C is a very basic concept, but it is very important for all pianists to understand where it is located not only on the keyboard, but also how to read it correctly on their sheet music.
